Reflection Questions:

  1. How are you with silence in general? Is it easy? Is it uncomfortable?

  2. What are some of the things that ache for you on this day of pause between Jesus’s death and resurrection?

Spiritual Practice: Silence

The practice of silence can feel particularly difficult in our modern technological age filled with smart devices, non-stop news, sports, entertainment, podcasts, music etc. In light of this, we can become uncomfortable with silence - unaccustomed to it and perhaps afraid of the aches it may uncover. However, in silence, there is an opportunity to listen to God, to receive from the stillness in the midst of the chaos of life and to grow in self-awareness in the loving care of God. Take some time to see how you might practice silence today.

Some ways of practicing silence:

  • Turn off the radio / music / podcasts while driving.

  • Set a period of time during the day to sit in silence. Start with maybe just 10 minutes if this is something new.

  • Go on a walk or do some exercise in a quiet place without listening to anything.

Bring all that comes up, the aches or the peace that silence might bring, to God in prayer.
