Your Ears Will Tingle! (1 Samuel 3:11)

Then the Lord said to Samuel:“Behold, I will do something in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.
1 Samuel 3:11

Some members of our family love to run up and down the stairs and place an extra heavy footing on the stairs and the upstairs flooring. Of course, this rattles the entire house and everyone laughs knowing that all can hear it AND feel it!

When God spoke to the young boy Samuel, before he was anointed priest and judge of Israel, He announced it with a particular flair. He would bring judgment upon the evil priests of Eli and his sons, for their disobedience and sins. And when He does bring judgment, everyone's ears will tingle or rattle with fear!

Our heavy stomping on the floors may annoy some of us and amuse others, but we all know that it is with lightness of heart. But when God pronounces a judgment, even the heaviest pounding of the floors will pale in comparison to the impact and delivery of His actions. Our ears, our very being, will tingle and rattle.

God can command our attention in many ways. Sometimes He speaks to us through the quiet touch of a hug or embrace of a family member. But other times, He must shake us until we repent and obey. Pray that we remain obedient to His calling and His leading.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Taking A Test with Your Teacher (Hebrews 4:15)

When I took my board certification examination for dermatopathology, I witnessed an unusual event, something I have never seen before or since. At the same time about a hundred  dermatopathology fellows were taking the exam, at the front of the room, were four esteemed veteran dermatopathologists, all professors and directors of dermatopathology training programs, also taking the same examination. I recognized all of them and one of them was a professor with whom I spent a great deal of time as a fellow.

During the break, this professor came up to me and asked me what I thought of the exam. I sheepishly admitted that I had difficulty with several of the questions, describing the questions to him. He nodded and said, “Don’t worry, we have already thrown out several questions that we all thought were controversial or poorly written. This is why we take the exam with you. You’ll do fine.”

Knowing this professor, with whom I previously worked with and greatly respected, was taking the same exam was very comforting. His reassurance about the difficult questions bolstered my confidence. I breathed a heavy sigh of relief as I returned and finished the examination.

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:15-16

This event reminds me of the sacrifices of our Lord Jesus Christ. When we are confronted with life’s challenges, no matter how bewildering or overwhelming, Jesus understands. He faced the same tests of life and did not fail. He did not sin. But He does so much more! He can directly intervene in our lives and help us when we call upon His name. We are more than conquerors through Jesus who loves us!

Won’t you take that step to trust Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? He has taken the same tests of life that we face and triumphed for eternity, all for our sake.

Aloha blessings!

Ready for Something New? (Lamentations 3:22-23)

Ready for something new?

Tom Fletcher, an English songwriter and musician, wanted to find a way to celebrate his wife’s 9 months of pregnancy. In a clever video montage, Tom performs a song he wrote entitled, Something New. As he sings it on the right side of the screen, his wife appears on the left side, midriff bare, treating us to her bodily transformation through her pregnancy.

A new birth…what a wonderful reminder of how God refreshes and renews our lives! Are you ready for something new? Let God renew you each morning by awakening you with His love!

Through the Lord's mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

Down Syndrome (1 Corinthians 1:27-29)

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NKJV)

Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, is caused by an extra chromosome 21. Instead of the usual two copies of the chromosome, there are three copies, hence trisomy. Many years ago, medical researchers discovered that Down syndrome adults developed signs of early dementia, often dying in their fourth or fifth decade of life. When the brains were examined, researchers were surprised to find the characteristic changes of Alzheimer’s disease. Further research demonstrated that a gene for a protein known as amyloid resides on chromosome 21. In both Alzheimer patients and Down syndrome, the brains have disorganized clumps of amyloid protein which interferes with normal neural transmissions and ultimately results in dementia.

Research money for Down syndrome has dwindled. What was once a robust effort to understand how to solve the cognitive defects of Down syndrome has now shifted to efforts to prevent Down syndrome by improving prenatal detection to facilitate an early abortion. In fact, many other genetic abnormalities have suffered a decline in research funding for similar reasons.

It is one of the great ironies of life and medicine that so much insight into the origins and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases have come because of Down syndrome patients. What other medical breakthroughs could be made from other genetic conditions by preserving and cherishing life rather than by ending it? God created man in His image. Although sin has separated us from the life we could have had, we will someday be restored by believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Every life that is born is special. God knows each of us from the moment of conception, nothing is hidden from Him.

For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.
Psalm 139:13-16 (NKJV)

My wife and I opted for an amniocentesis when blood tests revealed risk factors for Down syndrome. We chose the amniocentesis not because we were seeking to end our son’s life but because we wanted to better prepare if Down syndrome was the diagnosis. On Christmas eve 2002, we found out the diagnosis. We were devastated but trusted in God’s provision and providence. We quickly named our son Ian because we wanted to dignify his identity. Ian was born a month early and he spent two months in the NICU. During this period, a myriad of complications set in including seizures, a transient leukemia, and abnormal blood calcium levels. His muscle tone was so weak he could barely latch on to a nipple. When he came home, the therapy started. There were weekly physical and occupational therapies. Ian struggled just to lift his head. But God blessed Ian with a determined spirit and he was soon catching up to his milestones.

Seeking ways to prevent Down syndrome comes at the horrific cost of murdering an unborn child. But we camouflage the process under sterile terms as “improving prenatal detection”.  Medical science has achieved remarkable successes but there is a dark side. God truly uses the weak things of the world to shame the mighty and strong. A weak baby who could barely hold up his head has grown into a vibrant and strong boy who loves to play basketball, do math, and write stories. Last year, Ian learned to ride a bike. It is a typical milestone for many children but when we look back over how far God has brought him, we can only marvel at God’s grace and provisions. Ian daily challenges us to trust God with all things.

We may justify our actions in life because it is convenient or rationalize that it is for the greater good of society. But God does not accept shades of gray when it comes to human life. Every life, unborn or born is precious. And God will manifest His glory through the weak of the world, in spite of our worst efforts to prevent Him.

Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “ Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him."
John 9:1-3 (NKJV)

Our Lord Jesus Christ gave us the example that we should all follow. If we take the time to allow God’s works to be manifest in everyone’s lives, we will begin to understand the magnificent compassion that God showers upon His creation.

Trust in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

AMEN!

How Much is Enough? (John 21:25)

And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.
John 21:25

The Gospels record less than 50 miracles of Jesus. In fact, the Gospel of John records only 7. Yet, the very last verse of the Gospel of John records that Jesus did do many other things and presumably performed many more miracles. However, the Holy Spirit reveals to us only the miracles that are recorded in the 4 Gospels.

I wonder if the Bible recorded 50 more miracles, would doubters and non-believers be persuaded to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior? What about 1000 more miracles? How much is enough?

The miracles that Jesus performed are to help us believe in Jesus Christ. The miracles demonstrate the power and authority of Jesus over all the elements of nature and ultimately, His power over life and death. But for some, no amount of miracles, will ever be enough to convince them of the truth of Jesus. Why?

The explanations of the world, through science or theories of evolution, may be enough for some to reject the possibility of a supreme God. For others, unless they are actual eyewitnesses to a miracle, they will not believe. Still others, even if they saw and believed in the miracles, it does not mean that Jesus’ word is true. For this last group, miracles are just a manifestation of some abstract god that can manipulate the laws of the universe. But this god is not the God of the Bible.

God, through His Holy Spirit, has given us the Bible as the only record of how He created the universe and all the living creatures. It is complete and unerring. But for those who dismiss the Bible as God’s Word, how many have actually read it? How many have honestly examined what God has done throughout the history of the world? How many even know or realize what God has done for them? What more than the Bible does God have to give to us so that we may believe?

How much is enough? Only God knows that answer for each heart that is seeking the truth. If you do not know who God is, pray to Him that He would reveal Himself to you. God always answers the prayers of those who honestly come to Him seeking an answer. God will give you exceeding abundantly more than you ever thought you would need!

Aloha blessings!

Refresh Our Hearts (Philemon 1:20)

Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord.
Philemon 1:20

As believers, we seek to encourage one another in our walk through this life as we seek to become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. When we prayer for one another, we may ask God to intervene in someone’s life. Through the Holy Spirit, we may even gain insight into how God is working in that person’s life. But we must always keep in mind that regardless of whatever changes we see in their lives, we are not truly seeing the entire and true picture that God sees. In fact, we may become impatient with the one for whom we are praying, feeling that God is “not working” in that person’s life or even arrogantly assuming that person is not truly repentant and stiff necked to God’s leading. Only God knows the true state of our heart. And lest we be quick to judge another, remember the mercy and grace that God has shown you. God’s patience infinitely surpasses our own and it is a sobering thought to realize how many times we have failed Him and how He remains faithful to us. We should have a similar mindset as we pray for fellow believers. The Holy Spirit reminds us:

The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, And his glory is to overlook a transgression.
Proverbs 19:11

Examine the attitude of your heart to those whom God has called you to pray and encourage. God calls us to refresh one another’s heart in the Lord, not to be critical and impatient. Pray for your fellow believers, your brothers and sisters in Christ. And when you do see them, have joy for their lives. God is definitely working in every believer’s heart, whether we think we can see the changes or not. Allow God to refresh your heart through fellowship knowing that this is how God builds the body of His Church.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Aloha!

Being on God's Side (Romans 8:31)

Abraham Lincoln was president at one of the most critical periods in our nation’s history. A nation divided by slavery, President Lincoln had to address the needs of both the north and south during our civil war. Both sides were convinced that they were right; both sides thought that God was on their side. In the end, President Lincoln deftly maneuvered the political storms and reunited the country.

“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”
Abraham Lincoln

President Lincoln’s great faith in God sustained him, guided him, and inspired him. His knowledge of the Bible was impressive; it was said that as part of his daily devotional, he read a chapter from the book of Proverbs (31 chapters) every day of the month. His attitude and heart were squarely focused upon God.

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:31

The Holy Spirit reminds, us through the Apostle Paul, of the necessity of always being on God’s side. As we navigate through the complex relationships of life: our family, our friends, our co-workers, let us seek His will first rather than attempting to only appease others. When our heart and attitude are in step with God, all other relationships will follow.

Your Command is My Wish (Philippians 1:29)

For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.
Philippians 1:29

In tales of magical genies, when the genie is released from his lamp, he must grant any wish his rescuer desires. When the genie is told what this wish is, his usual reply is, “Your wish is my command!” Instantly the wish is granted by the magical powers of the genie. Pretty cool stuff if that could really happen! We do not have genies but we do have a Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A life with God is a life filled with granted wishes, but not always as we expect.

In this passage from Philippians, the Apostle Paul is rejoicing that his fellow believers have been counted amongst those who not only believe in Jesus Christ, but may also suffer for His sake. Paul wrote this epistle from prison. He was cold, hungry, and beaten; many of his supporters had deserted him. Yet, he remained confident and encouraged that all of his circumstances were in God’s control and that everything would turn out for the glory of God. How many of us can truly rejoice when we suffer doing the work of God? God’s command was for Paul to suffer for His sake.

It was God’s command and it was Paul’s wish.

Paul did not look for shortcuts in his life when serving Jesus Christ. He readily acknowledged that a life serving God is a life that is filled with joy. But joy does not simply mean happiness and external smiles and laughter. Joy is the contentment and confidence to know if we are obeying God, then everything that happens to you is in God’s will and will work together for good. How else could Paul rejoice when he was imprisoned? How else could he have confidence that his circumstances would turn out for the furtherance of the gospel?

We may think that a genie, that can grant all of our wishes, would eliminate all of our problems and make us happy. But God has given us the true answer to joy. He commands that we love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. And only through belief in His Son, Jesus Christ, will we be saved.

His command should be our wish.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Tears in a Bottle (Psalms 56:8)

Tear bottle.jpg

You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle;
Are they not in Your book?
Psalms 56:8

I have read many interpretations of this lovely verse. Some commentators have alluded to the tradition that mourners in that region would literally catch their tears in a bottle called lachrymatories (see photo) and place them as a tribute and honor in the tombs of their loved ones, symbolizing their love and devotion to the deceased. John Bunyan said, “God preserves our tears in a bottle, so that He can wipe them away.” Matthew Henry said, “The tears of God’s persecuted people are bottled up, and sealed among God’s treasures.”

God created us to love and worship Him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Emotions are at the core of such intense devotion to Him.  God created us as emotional beings and during our most intense moments of need or elation, our tears may appear. Even our Lord, Jesus Christ, wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus. When we cry, our tears should remind us that this a full and beautiful expression of how God is more than able to comfort us because He understands and loves us.

God’s bottle of my tears holds the promise of His blessings.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Gather Up the Fragments (John 6:12)

When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
John 6:12

Sometimes we think that God can only use us if we are at our best, if we have been educated at the best schools, worked at the most prestigious firms, or belong to the most exclusive organizations. God can certainly use people who have been blessed with such life experiences. But God is able to take anything that we give Him and use it for His glory. And sometimes He blesses us even when we think we have nothing to offer Him.

Louis Zamperini may be familiar to residents of Torrance, CA. Born and raised in Torrance and attending Torrance High School, he was a promising Olympic runner when he was drafted to serve during WW II. His plane was shot down in the Pacific and he survived adrift on a life raft for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese. He was held as a prisoner, beaten and tortured for nearly 2 years until the end of the war.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0pulc6kDsk

After the war, Zamperini drifted, suffering from post-traumatic stress and recovering from his physical injuries. He felt lost but God had other plans for his life. After attending a Billy Graham crusade, he accepted the Lord. He returned to Japan and faced his former jailors and forgave them, preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ.

If you have not read his biography, Unbroken, make the time to do so. It will inspire you!  Mr. Zamperini will serve as the Grand Marshall of the 2015 Tournament of Roses in Pasadena. At nearly 100 years of age, he continues to honor God in his life and inspire others to seek and find God, the way he did. God took a broken and fragmented body but not a broken spirit and used it for His glory! Amen!

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Addendum
Mr. Zamperini went home to be with the Lord on July 2nd, 2014. May God surround his family with peace and strength. Thanks be to God for allowing us to know His wonderful child of faith!

Talent and Willingness (Exodus 36:1-2)

And Bezalel and Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whom the Lord has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the Lord has commanded.”  Then Moses called Bezalel and Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whose heart the Lord had put wisdom, everyone whose heart was stirred, to come and do the work.
Exodus 36:1-2

Do you play a musical instrument or love to paint or dance? Perhaps you like to sew or write? God honors us with gifts from His Holy Spirit. He gives us these gifts to bring glory to Him and to encourage others to seek and love Him. God chose Bezalel and Aholiab to construct the tabernacle and its contents. He set them apart to do His work, not only because of their talents, but because they had a servant’s heart. They were willing to serve.

Who can forget this offering of music by Tony Melendez?  Born without arms, he learned to play the guitar with his feet and offered this song to Pope John Paul II in 1987.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlZPYGBXQ44

God does not judge us by the quality of our talent but by the sincerity of our offering. If God has blessed you with a particular talent, thank Him and be willing to use it in service to Him.

Aloha blessings!

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

More Than Meets the Eye (Mark 4:20)

The UV or ultraviolet camera is an interesting device that can highlight precancerous skin conditions. In this series of photographs, produced by the American Academy of Dermatology, the UV camera documents a striking progression of sun damage with patients of varying and advancing ages.

http://www.skincarephysicians.com/agingskinnet/uv_photography.html

What is surprising to the subjects and observers is the amount of damage that is apparently hidden, only to be revealed by this different wavelengths of light. Patients may get a wake-up call as to the importance of remaining vigilant over their amount of sun exposure and to take the necessary precautions. Makeup may cover the blemishes but the UV camera reveals the truth. There is far more damage than meets the eye!

What if there were a way to reveal the behaviors that we are now doing that may lead to serious problems and sins later in our lives? If we could identify them early, would we stop or modify these behaviors?

For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.
Mark 4:20

God knows everything about us. No excuses, shifting of blame, or misdirection will ever cover or remove the sins in our life. Like the UV camera, all of our hidden faults are laid open and bared before Him. So what hope do we have? If we have placed our trust in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we will have the Holy Spirit indwelling within us. Our hidden behaviors and glossed over sins come to light by His convictions in our conscience. And by God’s infinite grace and mercy, He forgives us of our sins, when we confess them to Him, and He transforms our lives to become more like Jesus Christ. Only a loving God would do this! He made the effort to bring us into a right relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

God Doesn't Make Mistakes (Isaiah 55:8-9)

God doesn’t make mistakes.

This is a touching video that shows the interaction between a young boy with Down Syndrome and a dog. No words are spoken. None need to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSH8PYmYDBo#t=151

The end of the video streams the message, “God doesn’t make mistakes.” The world will tell us that conditions such as Down Syndrome are proof that God is not in control of this world or creation. The pundits tout that advances in medicine and science will “cure” these conditions. They exalt the intelligence and ingenuity of man to fix all “problems”. But Down Syndrome isn’t a mistake, a problem, or a condition that needs to be fixed.  It is but one way that God reaches out to His creation to demonstrate His love.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, or your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isaiah 55:8-9

My son has Down Syndrome. As a physician, I may understand some of the medical reasons. As a father, I may understand some of the challenges of life that lie ahead. But as a child of God, I only understand that God has blessed our family with our son so that we can begin to understand the unlimited and unfathomable grace and mercy that He shows to all who believe in Him and place their trust in Him.

God doesn’t make mistakes.

He never does.

Blessings with Aloha.

The Most Luxurious Flight (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)

Only the ridiculously wealthy need apply!

Etihad Airlines has put together the ultimate in commercial airline luxury. This Airbus A380 has transformed its upper deck into The Residence, a luxurious 3 room suite, replete with a personal chef! The cost? A mere $40,000….ONE WAY!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLZ2iDLPcxw

If you need to get somewhere, why not fly in style? Guess what? The Bible has a flight for you.

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Flying in the The Residence is a luxurious flight, but only a few will be able to afford it. But the most luxurious flight awaits all believers the day Jesus Christ returns to earth. They will meet Him in the air...and it is a one way trip to heaven led by our Lord! What a glorious day that will be!

The cost? Believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Amen!

Right in Front of Me! (1 Peter 2:25)

It was the usual hustle and bustle of fellowship after church. Instead of gathering in the fellowship hall, the congregation was meeting and greeting outside, near the classrooms. Being height challenged, it was difficult for me to see over the crowd as I searched for my young son. It was an unfamiliar protocol for him and I was concerned he may be confused or lost. After several minutes of searching, I shook my head and looked down, only to see my son standing in front of me and looking up at my face.  Before I could say anything, he opened wide his arms so that I could eagerly embrace him. What a relief! All along, he was right in front of me!

Ever search for God’s blessings only to find it was right in front of you all along? We can do many things to take the place of God, but the result is restlessness, boredom, and a same ‘ol same ‘ol attitude. However we stray, it is a comfort to know that God takes the initiative to find us and when He does, opens His arms to completely embrace us and welcome us back.

For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
1 Peter 2:25

God keeps us secure in His love, even when we think we need something else.

Aloha blessings!

Thinking Inside the Box (Romans 12:2)

malaria parasite

Sometimes you have to think inside the box!

Scientists at the Rhode Island Hospital’s Center for International Health have come up with a novel approach to a vaccine for malaria. Malaria is caused by parasite that is carried by a mosquito and is introduced into our bloodstream when we are bit by the insect. Once the malaria parasite enters our bloodstream, it immediately infects the red blood cells and liver cells. The above photograph, taken from Smithsonian Magazine, captures the moment the malaria parasites are bursting through the red blood cells.  Most vaccine therapies have focused upon blocking the parasite from entering the cell or attempting to directly eradicate the parasite. These scientists focused on a protein PfSEA-1. This protein is critical to allowing the malaria parasite to escape a red blood cell so that it may infect other red blood cells. A vaccine was created that blocked the protein, trapping the parasite in the red blood cells, and preventing the malaria parasite to escape, thus mitigating further spread of the parasite. The entrapped parasites remained in the red blood cells until normally cleared by the spleen. These researchers were thinking outside the box by thinking inside the box!

We often seek solutions to life’s problems by looking for creative answers, thinking outside the box. We pass laws to ensure that no group is disenfranchised. We create programs to address a wide variety of needs. All of these efforts are noble but all are external solutions and do not address the root of the problem. The problem is us. We are all sinners. The change has to first come from within us.

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:2

God has provided all of us a solution through faith and belief in His Son, Jesus Christ.  Solving life’s problems can be an exercise in creative solutions. But to truly solve the problems of life, we need to first think inside the box. We need a Savior who can change our hearts and make us right with God. Only then can God transform us, renew our minds, and allow us to see the problems and solutions to life, the way that He wants us to see them.

Blessings with Aloha!

But We're Speaking Japanese! (John 10:24-28)

When we listen to others, are we truly listening to what they are saying or do we have our perceptions colored by our prejudices and expectations? It could be, if you believe this light-hearted video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLt5qSm9U80

Jesus Christ spoke plainly to everyone who would listen to Him. He demonstrated the works of God through miracles. He taught with a unique authority, like no other teacher who had previously lived or since. And yet, even when He was right in front of His critics, some refused to believe in Him. They were blinded by their own prejudices and preconceived notions what the Messiah should be. They were convinced that they were right and He was wrong.

Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”
Jesus answered them, “ I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me, And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand."
John 10:24-28

Even if we have attended church or Sunday school all our lives or were raised in a Christian home, we may not truly know who Jesus Christ really is. There is only one truth. Jesus Christ is God and only by accepting Him as our Lord and Savior will we be forgiven of our sins and be saved. There is no other name under Heaven or on earth by whom we can be saved. Jesus’ message of salvation is to all of us.

Are you truly listening or only hearing what you want to hear?

Love and respect the Lord; seek His will in your life.

Supersaturate Yourself with the Word (Proverbs 6:21-23)

Dr. Linus Pauling was a brilliant scientist and researcher who, along with Madame Marie Curie, is one of only two people who have been awarded the Nobel prize in two separate categories. In 1970, Dr. Pauling wrote his controversial, albeit popular book, VItamin C and the Common Cold. This book was followed by another, How to Live Longer and Feel Better. In both books, Dr. Pauling advocated high doses of vitamin C to combat viral infections, that cause the majority of colds, and cancer. The medical community has always been sharply divided on the science and merit of taking high doses of vitamin C, claiming the studies that initially touted the efficacy of vitamin C were murky at best. Nonetheless, Dr. Pauling was able to get the popular press on his side and there are now many over the counter cold remedies, replete with high concentrations of the vitamin.  Whether this is good science or a placebo effect at work, vitamin C has integrated into our mainstream health consciousness.

I prefer the term supersaturation as a means to explain what Dr. Pauling was trying to achieve. Vitamin C, Dr. Pauling averred, had to be taken in a sufficiently high dosage to supersaturate the cell, correcting any deficiencies that were introduced by a virus or cancer causing agent.

What if we applied this principle to God’s Word? What if we completely immersed ourselves in it, supersaturating over very being with it? What if every where we turn in our home, our workplace, our leisure time, the Word of God was posted in front of us? The Holy Spirit directs us to do just that!

Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,
Proverbs 6:21-23

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ quoted God’s Word during His times of greatest trials.  Like Jesus, we need to be so dependent upon God’s Word that it comes to our minds and lips during every situation and trial we face, to strengthen and reassure us. And we need to quote it accurately and completely.

When I lived in Denver, Colorado, the pastor of my church was an avid student of the Bible. I recall a sermon when he held up his Bible and stated, “I have worn out at least one Bible a year!” At first I thought he was exaggerating but as I got to know him, I saw the discipline and enthusiasm with which he studied and devoured the Word of God. He truly did wear out more than one Bible a year! He loved God’s Word and was so eager to share it and teach others of God’s love, grace and mercy.

Let’s supersaturate ourselves with God’s Word. Unlike vitamin C, no randomized blinded studies are needed to prove the truth of God’s Word! We will see and reap the immediate benefits in our lives as we live out the commandments of God.

AMEN!

A Buddy for Life (Proverbs 12:10)

Army Sgt. Jason Bos left the military in 2012 because of a back injury. His partner was not another soldier but a bomb sniffing chocolate labrador named Cici. When Sgt. Boss heard that Cici was retired, he quickly made plans to adopt her. This is their reunion.

A righteous man regards the life of his animal, But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.
Proverbs 12:10
A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 17:17

It seems appropriate to place these two proverbs next to each other. This dog, Cici, was Sgt. Boss’ buddy for life. Imagine the many dangerous missions they both shared, saving countless lives and forever bonding in the process.

All relationships that are based upon love and respect are a beautiful representation of the infinite love and honor that God bestows upon us when we trust His Son, Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior. God’s love extends far beyond human relationships. God's original plan in the Garden of Eden was to give Adam dominion over all of nature. Sin has marred this perfect relationship but someday, when Jesus Christ returns, we will live in a perfect world where all relationships, even the ones with animals, will be restored.

I am looking forward to that wonderful day!

Blessings with Aloha!

p53 and the Sin of Pride (Proverbs 6:16-19)

p53 is the most commonly mutated gene in cancers. Its normal function is to regulate apoptosis, a sophisticated mechanism that controls the death of cells. To cite a very few examples of the ubiquitous nature of this gene, whenever we shed hair, skin, or renew our blood cells, p53 is involved. But when p53 is mutated or altered, it loses this ability and allows the cell mechanisms to run amuck, growing out of control. The result may be cancer or a process that will lead the cell to an eventual cancer.

The Bible lists many sins but perhaps none is more devastating than pride. Like p53, it is ever present and involved in nearly every type of sin. The origins of pride can arise with very noble intentions. It is important to take pride in one’s work, in one’s appearance, in the character and honesty of one’s relationships. But like p53, if this balance goes awry, our pride can become envy, jealousy, vanity, and insecurity.

These six things the Lord hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that are swift in running to evil, a false witness who speaks lies, and one who sows discord among brethren.
Proverbs 6:16-19

Why does God place a proud look or pride as the first sin that He hates? In many instances, pride can lead to the other six sins that God hates. Think about how many people in the Bible have fallen because of their pride-Saul, Samson, and Hamman, just to list a few. Even in one the shortest books of the Bible, 3 John, Diotrephes is singled out as a member of the church who “loves to have the preeminence” (verse 9).

The sin of pride should remind us how easy it is to lose our balance and focus upon God. If we do, like a mutation in p53, we can allow our lives to careen down a destructive path, far removed from the plan of peace and contentment that God desires for all of us.

Love and respect the Lord; seek His Will in your life.

Amen!
