Why Do We Have Eyebrows? (Romans 11:33)

“Dad, why do we have fingernails? Why do we have eyebrows?”

Although I am a physician and was a biology major, I cannot think of a reasonable answer to my daughter’s questions. Sure, I can quote what evolutionary biologists like to hypothesize, that fingernails were originally claws and that humans “did not need” these claws for finer motor movements so we “developed” fingernails. These same biologists state with equal aplomb that as humans “evolved” to lose their facial hair, there were “evolutionary benefits” to keep the eyebrows as important means of non-verbal communication.

How amazing it is for all animals to be able to direct their own evolution and gain or lose critical body parts in order to evolve and adapt! As clever as these “explanations” are for these body parts, the truth may never be known, at least not in our lifetimes.

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
Romans 11:33

God is sovereign and His knowledge is not ours. He is under no obligation to reveal His ways or explain His motives why He created us the way He did, fingernails, eyebrows, and all. We are privileged to learn about who He is by the revelation through the Bible. And when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, He give us His Holy Spirit to indwell within us to teach and instruct us to become more like Jesus.

Man can conjure up some fantastic explanations over why we have certain body parts. But the truth is God created us with these body parts for a specific reason; we are to glorify God with our bodies and our lives.

For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.
1 Corinthians 6:20

God has answered the why. Our response is to thank and praise Him!

Love and trust the Lord; seek His will in your life.
